Women’s South Shore Golf League Celebrates 100 Years by Inspiring the Next Generation at Marshfield Country Club
MARSHFIELD, Mass. — A century of women’s golf on the South Shore was celebrated Tuesday as the Women’s South Shore Golf League (WSSGL) marked its 100th anniversary with a special event designed to inspire young golfers.
Hosted at Marshfield Country Club, the league’s free “Girls on Course” clinic welcomed 130 girls ages 5 to 17, surpassing its original goal of 100 participants. Throughout the day, attendees received instruction from New England PGA professionals, enjoyed games, face painting, food, and an ice cream truck, while many also received golf equipment to help them continue playing the sport.
League organizers said the event celebrated the legacy of women who built the organization over the past 100 years while creating opportunities for a new generation to discover golf.
Marshfield Country Club General Manager James Antonelli said the hope is that today’s young golfers will carry on the tradition of competition and camaraderie that has defined the league since 1926. Centennial committee member Maria Bonzagni added that making the event girls-only helps create a welcoming environment where beginners can build confidence and develop a lifelong interest in the game.
The Women’s South Shore Golf League, founded in 1926, connects women golfers from clubs across the South Shore through tournaments, competition, and community events. The organization will continue its centennial celebration later this year with a commemorative tournament and dinner.
