Abington, Mass. — FOX25 News Reports Family Says Teen Driver Did Not Steal SUV Before Deadly Crash

The family of 17-year-old Sebastian Hamilton is challenging early reports surrounding last week’s fatal crash in Abington, telling FOX25 News they believe the teen was not responsible for stealing the SUV involved in the collision.

Hamilton was killed when the Hyundai Santa Fe crashed into a tree on Washington Street after Abington police attempted to stop the vehicle. A second teenage passenger later died from injuries suffered in the crash, while three other teens remain hospitalized. Authorities have previously said the SUV had been reported stolen before the incident.

According to FOX25 News, Hamilton’s great-aunt, speaking on behalf of the family, said another teenager allegedly took a parent’s vehicle without permission before picking up friends, including Sebastian. The family says Sebastian got into the SUV after it arrived outside his home and insists he did not steal the vehicle.

The family described Sebastian as a caring teenager who had endured significant personal loss in recent months. They said he had stepped up to help care for his younger sister following the death of his father and was preparing to speak at his father’s memorial service the day the crash occurred. His great-aunt described him as “the man of this family.”

Family members also said they hope people do not judge Sebastian solely based on the circumstances of the crash. They described him as a kind young man who cared deeply about his family and friends and said their hearts also go out to the family of the second teen who lost her life.

The fatal crash remains under investigation by the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office and Abington Police. Investigators have not announced whether their findings regarding the reported stolen vehicle have changed since the initial investigation began.
