Bail set After Grocery Store Dispute Leads to Police Chase in Middleborough
MIDDLEBOROUGH MA — Two young parents are facing multiple charges after police say a domestic dispute outside a Middleborough grocery store escalated into a police chase Sunday morning with their 11-month-old child inside the vehicle.
According to authorities, officers were called to Trucchi’s Supermarket on Grove Street after reports of an argument between a man and woman in the parking lot. Witnesses told police the confrontation became heated, and one person who attempted to intervene was allegedly threatened with a knife.
Before officers arrived, the couple reportedly left the area in a vehicle with their infant child. Police later located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but investigators say the driver refused to stop, leading officers on a pursuit through the area.
The chase eventually came to an end on Plymouth Street, where police took both occupants into custody. The child was safely removed from the vehicle and was not injured.
Police identified the driver as 19-year-old Mariah Mitchell and the passenger as 20-year-old Jamell Spurill.
Mitchell is charged with failure to stop for police, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, marked lanes violations, failure to stop or yield, reckless endangerment of a child, resisting arrest, and accessory after the fact.
Spurill is charged with assault and battery on a household member, assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, reckless endangerment of a child, and resisting arrest.
During their arraignment, prosecutors said the argument allegedly stemmed from a dispute involving a cellphone used for DoorDash deliveries. Court records indicate the couple’s 11-month-old child was placed in the custody of Mitchell’s mother following the incident.
Both defendants were ordered held on $500 bail and were ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim.
The case remains under investigation.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
