Abington, Mass. — Second Teen Dies Following Washington Street Crash as Investigation Continues

A second teenager has died following the devastating single-vehicle crash on Washington Street in Abington that claimed the life of a 17-year-old driver earlier this week.

Abington Police Chief John Bonney confirmed that a 16-year-old female passenger succumbed to her injuries on the evening of July 30 while receiving treatment at a Boston hospital. The Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office also confirmed the death but has not released the victim’s identity.

The crash occurred at approximately 7:50 a.m. Wednesday when a red Hyundai Santa Fe struck a large tree near 877 Washington Street. Authorities said the SUV was carrying five teenagers, ranging in age from 14 to 17, at the time of the collision.

Seventeen-year-old Sebastian Hamilton was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said one female passenger was ejected from the vehicle during the impact, while the remaining occupants had to be freed from the wreckage by firefighters. Abington Fire Department recalled both on-duty and off-duty personnel to respond to the severity of the incident and assist with rescuing the victims before they were transported to area hospitals.

The tragic crash has deeply affected the community and local first responders.

In a public statement, Abington Fire Chief Jack Glynn described the incident as one that will remain with emergency responders for the rest of their careers, noting the emotional toll such tragedies take on those who respond.

A growing memorial of flowers, candles, and other tributes has been established near the crash site to honor Hamilton and the other teenagers involved. Several of the victims are reportedly from neighboring Rockland.

According to family members interviewed by Boston 25 News, Hamilton’s father had recently died, and his wake had been scheduled for the same day as the fatal crash.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the collision.

Chief Bonney said an Abington police officer had identified the Hyundai as a vehicle that had been reported stolen earlier that morning. The officer began following the SUV after running its license plate while it was traveling on Walnut Street. Investigators said the vehicle then turned onto Centre Avenue before entering Washington Street, where it accelerated to a high rate of speed before crashing into the tree.

Bonney emphasized during an earlier press briefing that although Hamilton was driving a vehicle reported stolen, investigators had not determined that he was the individual responsible for stealing it.

The Abington police officer involved in the pursuit has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard department procedure following incidents of this nature.

Chief Glynn also urged the public to show compassion toward the victims, their families, and the emergency personnel affected by the tragedy. He encouraged people to avoid posting hurtful comments on social media and instead remember that lives have been forever changed.

The fatal crash remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, in coordination with the Abington Police Department. Authorities have not released additional information as the investigation continues.
