MARSHFIELD, Mass. — What started as a routine task at a local harbor quickly turned into a dramatic accident after a driver accidentally sent a pickup truck off a pier and into the water at Green Harbor.
According to authorities, the incident happened while the man was attempting to back his truck down the pier to unload bait and gear onto a nearby fishing vessel. During the maneuver, he reportedly mistook the accelerator for the brake, causing the truck to suddenly surge backward.
Witnesses say the vehicle shot off the pier with little warning, striking a docked boat and nearby equipment before plunging approximately 15 feet into the harbor below. The impact caused a loud crash that drew attention from people in the area, including fishermen and nearby workers.
Despite the intensity of the moment, the driver managed to react quickly as the truck began to sink, escaping through the rear window before the vehicle became fully submerged. First responders were called to the scene, but officials confirmed that no serious injuries were reported.
The crash did result in damage to both the pickup truck and the boat it struck, along with some equipment on the pier. Recovery crews later worked to remove the submerged vehicle from the water.
Police say the incident appears to be an accident caused by driver error, and no charges are expected at this time.
? Witness Moments
Several bystanders described the incident as happening “in seconds,” with one noting that the truck “just took off” before anyone could react. Others rushed toward the edge of the pier, concerned for the driver’s safety, but he was able to make it out on his own.
⚠️ Safety Reminder
While uncommon, pedal mix-ups are a known cause of sudden vehicle acceleration incidents. Drivers are urged to take extra caution when maneuvering in tight areas, especially near water, docks, or drop-offs where there is little room for error
