60,000 Gallons of Sewage Accidentally Discharged Into Merrimack River
HAVERHILL, Mass. — MassLive is reporting that approximately 60,000 gallons of untreated sewage were accidentally discharged into the Merrimack River after a sewer maintenance incident in Haverhill on Thursday.
According to city officials, the release occurred when wastewater was mistakenly diverted into the city’s storm drain system during maintenance work, allowing it to flow into waterways connected to the Merrimack River. The discharge has since been stopped.

State and local environmental officials are monitoring water quality, and residents are being urged to avoid swimming, wading, fishing, or any other direct contact with the affected sections of the Merrimack River until testing confirms the water is safe.
The incident remains under investigation, and officials are continuing to assess any potential environmental impacts while cleanup and monitoring efforts continue.
