Honoring Captain Curtis L. Ireland: A Lifetime Dedicated to Plymouth and Country

Plymouth Mass-The Plymouth community is reflecting on the long, distinguished life of Curtis L. Ireland—a former Plymouth Police Captain, U.S. Coast Guard veteran, and lifelong local resident who passed away on Sept. 2 at the age of 90. Laid to rest at Vine Hills Cemetery, Captain Ireland leaves behind a legacy defined by nearly three decades of dedicated law enforcement service, military duty during the Korean conflict, and deep roots in the town he called home.

Service to Country and Community

Born in Plymouth on Jan. 19, 1936, to Weldon E. and Alberta R. (Peck) Ireland, Curtis grew up immersed in the local community and graduated from Kingston High School. Before answering the call to protect his hometown, he served his country as a U.S. Coast Guard veteran during the Korean conflict—a period that laid the foundation for a lifetime of public duty.

In May 1968, Ireland joined the Plymouth Police Department, beginning a career that would span 29 years. Driven by a commitment to professional excellence, he pursued extensive specialized training through the Brockton Police Academy and the Babson College Training School. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Stonehill College, graduating summa cum laude.

Through steady leadership and unwavering dedication, Ireland rose through the department ranks, ultimately retiring as Captain in 1997. His commitment to his peers and profession extended well beyond his daily shifts through active membership in the Massachusetts Police Association, the Plymouth Police Relief Association, the Massachusetts Retired Employees Association, and the Plymouth Masonic Lodge.

A Cherished Personal Legacy

Beyond his uniform, Captain Ireland found joy in life’s simpler pleasures, particularly sharing a passion for collecting antiques and vintage toys alongside his beloved late wife, Sandra F. (Weichel) Ireland.

He was preceded in death by Sandra; his daughter, Jane Helminiak; his brothers, Robert, Stanley, and Donald Ireland; and his sisters-in-law, Diane and Joanne Ireland.

His memory continues to be cherished by his surviving family: his son-in-law Marc Helminiak; his granddaughter Shaelyn Helminiak and her fiancé Benji Brousseau of New York; his sister-in-law Jane Kelly; his nephew Shawn Ireland; and his nieces Kim Ireland and Heather Bumpus.

Continuing the Honor

Though services have concluded at Vine Hills Cemetery, those wishing to honor Captain Ireland’s memory and support the department he helped lead for nearly three decades may make memorial contributions to:
