As jurors continue deliberating in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial, neighbors in Duxbury are speaking publicly about the evidence and pushing back against conspiracy theories surrounding the deaths of three young children.

Clancy is accused of killing her three children—5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan—inside the family’s Duxbury home on January 24, 2023. Clancy has acknowledged that she killed the children, but her defense argues she was suffering from severe mental illness, including postpartum psychosis, and should not be held criminally responsible.

Prosecutors have presented evidence they say shows Clancy deliberately created an opportunity to carry out the killings.

One of the key points discussed at trial involves Patrick Clancy being away from the home that evening. Prosecutors contend Lindsay arranged for Patrick to leave the house to pick up food and medication, giving her time alone with the children.

A neighbor, Eric McDonald, told The U.S. Sun that Patrick’s absence stood out and that he believes the decision to send him away supports the prosecution’s theory that the killings were planned.

Other evidence presented during the trial includes phone and location data. Prosecutors have pointed to evidence showing that a route to Three V Restaurant had been searched on Lindsay’s phone before the killings. Phone data also showed activity involving the stairs shortly after Patrick left the home. Prosecutors argue the timeline supports their contention that the killings occurred after Patrick had been sent away.

However, the defense has offered a very different explanation. Defense attorneys argue that Clancy’s severe mental-health problems affected her ability to understand reality and that evidence of planning does not necessarily establish that she was criminally responsible for her actions.

Neighbors interviewed by The U.S. Sun also rejected online conspiracy theories suggesting Patrick Clancy was responsible for the children’s deaths. Longtime neighbor Mark Shortt said people from outside Duxbury have contacted him asking whether Patrick could have been involved. Shortt said he does not believe those theories and noted that Lindsay herself has admitted killing the children.

At the same time, some neighbors said the central question is not necessarily who killed the children, but what Lindsay Clancy’s mental state was when she did it.

The case has now reached a critical point. On Tuesday, September 1, the jury reported that it was unable to reach a unanimous verdict after four days of deliberations. The judge sent jurors home and instructed them to return Wednesday to continue deliberating.

The jury—not neighbors, prosecutors, defense attorneys or people following the case online—will ultimately determine whether the evidence proves criminal responsibility beyond the required legal standard.
