Two Hospitalized with Serious Injuries Following Major Route 18 Crash in Lakeville

A collision involving a motorcycle and an SUV closed Bedford Street in both directions Monday evening as state and local reconstruction teams investigated the scene.

LAKEVILLE, Mass. — A severe collision involving a motorcycle and a compact SUV sent two people to the hospital with serious injuries and forced the complete closure of a major Plymouth County roadway during the evening commute on Monday, September 7, 2026.

Emergency first responders were dispatched to Route 18, locally known as Bedford Street, at approximately 6:24 p.m. following multiple emergency calls reporting a high-impact crash. Upon arrival, crews from the Lakeville Police Department and the Lakeville Fire Department discovered a Yamaha motorcycle and a Honda CR-V that had collided in the roadway, leaving both operators severely injured.

Emergency Response and Patient Transport

According to Lakeville Police Chief Matthew Perkins, first responders immediately initiated life-support measures on both individuals at the scene.

The operator of the Yamaha motorcycle, an adult male, suffered serious physical injuries as a result of the impact. The driver of the Honda CR-V, an adult female, also sustained severe injuries in the crash. First responders determined that both individuals required immediate advanced emergency medical care, and both were subsequently transported by ambulance to Morton Hospital in Taunton for further evaluation and treatment.

Officials confirmed that neither vehicle was carrying additional passengers at the time of the collision. Law enforcement officials have not yet released the names or ages of either driver, pending formal family notifications and the preliminary findings of the crash investigation.

Traffic Impact and Multi-Agency Coordination

The force of the collision and the extensive field of debris required an immediate, full shutdown of Route 18 in both directions. Police officers erected barricades and established local traffic detours to keep commuters clear of the area, causing noticeable delays for motorists traveling between Lakeville, Middleboro, and neighboring towns.

Given the severity of the crash and the potential for life-threatening injuries, local authorities requested specialized assistance to properly document and reconstruct the incident scene. The Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS) was called in to conduct a comprehensive forensic investigation. CARS investigators utilized specialized mapping tools to measure tire marks, analyze impact trajectories, evaluate vehicle positions, and examine mechanical debris scatter.

The response highlighted significant multi-agency coordination within the region. In addition to Lakeville’s police and fire personnel, officers from the Middleboro Police Department provided crucial traffic control and perimeter support, while deputies from the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office assisted with scene security and regional communications.

Ongoing Investigation and Corridor Safety

While the precise cause of the crash remains under active investigation by the Lakeville Police Department and the State Police CARS unit, the incident highlights ongoing safety concerns along key regional arterial corridors like Route 18. The multi-lane stretch serves as a vital thoroughfare connecting Plymouth and Bristol Counties, regularly seeing heavy mixed traffic comprised of passenger vehicles, commercial trucks, and motorcycles.

Authorities have not yet determined whether factors such as speed, road visibility, weather conditions, or right-of-way violations contributed to the crash. Lakeville Police indicated that further updates regarding the condition of the injured drivers and any potential citations or charges will be made public as the investigation proceeds.

while investigators continue to gather evidence and interview potential witnesses. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or observed either vehicle prior to 6:24 p.m. is urged to contact the Lakeville Police Department directly.
