Pembroke MA — Firefighters are currently on the scene of a significant brush fire on Benjamins Path that has destroyed multiple structures and triggered a call for off-duty reinforcements.
The department responded to the initial report around 11:30 AM. Upon arrival, crews discovered more than an acre of woodland ablaze, with the fire quickly spreading to involve two sheds.
Rapid Response and Mutual Aid
The incident occurred during a period of high service demand, as two local ambulances and four on-duty members were already committed to other emergencies. To manage the growing fire, a general call was issued for off-duty personnel to return to service.
The response was a true community effort:
- Mutual Aid: A brush truck from the Duxbury Fire Department arrived on-scene to assist with containment.
- Internal Support: Off-duty members and even the department’s high school intern stepped in to support the active fire lines.
Water Supply and Resident Impact
To combat the blaze, crews have opened a fire hydrant in the area. This high-volume draw, compounded by nearby construction, is expected to disturb sediment in the water system.
Residents in the vicinity may notice:
- Discoloration: Water may appear “dirty” or tea-colored.
- Pressure Drops: Temporary fluctuations in water pressure are expected while hydrants are in use.
- Safety: Officials state the water remains safe to use, though residents should avoid doing laundry until the water runs clear to prevent staining.
Post-Incident Instructions
Once fire activity subsides later this evening, residents are advised to clear their lines by running the cold water in a kitchen sink or an outside faucet at a slow flow for 20–30 minutes. If discoloration persists, turn the water off for one hour to allow the mains to settle before trying again.
The department appreciates the community’s patience and the swift assistance from our neighbors in Duxbury during this incident.
