Work Begins on Phase 2 Accessibility Upgrades at Onset’s Lopes Playground
ONSET, Mass. — Phase 2 of the ADA perimeter pathway project at Lopes Playground is officially under way, bringing expanded accessibility and new community-led landscaping to the local favorite on Onset Avenue.
Organizers at Wareham CORE (Community Outdoor Recreation) announced the milestone today, marking the next step in a town-wide effort to ensure the playground and surrounding grounds are fully accessible to residents and visitors of all mobility levels.
Upgraded Pathways & Student Stewardship
The current phase focuses on extending the park’s smooth, wheel-friendly perimeter loop. The new paths utilize stabilized stone dust donated by Read Custom Soils and A.D. Makepeace Company, creating a firm, durable surface suitable for wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers.
Beyond structural improvements, the project has expanded into a hands-on community partnership. Students from Wareham High School, led by teacher Ms. Cannon, have officially adopted the playground’s two central landscape islands. The students are managing planting, weeding, and ongoing seasonal maintenance as part of a year-round stewardship effort.
Town & Regional Support
Groundwork and site preparation are being executed by the Wareham Municipal Maintenance Department under the direction of Dave Menard, working alongside CORE volunteers to complete the earthwork and pathway installation.
Temporary Park Restrictions
With heavy equipment active around the grounds, organizers advise visitors to exercise caution near marked work areas. Visitors are asked to follow all posted signage and stay within designated open areas while construction is active.
