66-Year-Old Man Dies After Being Pulled From Duxbury Bay by Bystanders
DUXBURY, Mass. — A 66-year-old man has died after experiencing distress while swimming in Duxbury Bay on Sunday afternoon, despite lifesaving efforts by bystanders, an off-duty police officer, and emergency responders.
According to officials, emergency crews were dispatched to the shoreline near Bradford Road at approximately 4:30 p.m. after reports that a swimmer was struggling in the water. Before firefighters, police officers, and paramedics arrived, several bystanders entered the water or assisted from shore, bringing the man safely onto land.

An off-duty Duxbury police officer who happened to be nearby immediately began CPR while additional emergency personnel responded. Firefighters and paramedics continued advanced lifesaving measures before transporting the man to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Plymouth for further treatment.
Despite those efforts, authorities said the man later died at the hospital.
The Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office and Duxbury Police are investigating the incident, which is being treated as an apparent accidental drowning. Officials said there is currently no indication of foul play, and the man’s identity has not yet been released pending notification of his family.
The incident serves as a reminder that even experienced swimmers can encounter life-threatening emergencies in coastal waters. Cold water temperatures, tidal currents, fatigue, hidden drop-offs, and sudden medical emergencies can all contribute to dangerous situations. Public safety officials encourage anyone swimming in the ocean to remain aware of changing conditions, avoid swimming alone whenever possible, and seek immediate help if someone appears to be in distress.
The actions of the bystanders and the off-duty officer provided the swimmer with immediate assistance before first responders arrived, highlighting the importance of quick action during water emergencies. While the rescue efforts ultimately were not enough to save the man’s life, authorities often emphasize that rapid intervention can significantly improve survival chances in drowning incidents.
The investigation remains ongoing.
