HULL, MA – Hull High School will serve as the center of local governance tomorrow night, Monday, May 4, at 7:00 PM, as residents gather for the 2026 Annual Town Meeting. With 44 articles on the warrant, voters face critical decisions regarding the town’s fiscal future, infrastructure projects, and administrative structure.
The Fiscal Snapshot
The centerpiece of the evening is Article 8, a proposed $56.6 million budget for Fiscal Year 2027. This represents a 3.43% increase over the previous year. Key allocations include:
- Public Safety: Funding for two additional full-time firefighters and a $156,000 investment in police vehicle replacements.
- Infrastructure & Environment: Dedicated funds for seawall maintenance ($38k) and the continued health of Straits Pond ($30k).
- Digital Modernization: $171k for town-wide tech upgrades, including a $20,000 line item for a complete redesign of the town’s official website.
Major Projects & “Hot Button” Issues
Beyond the standard budget, several high-stakes articles are expected to drive significant debate:
- Town Hall Relocation (Article 26): Voters are being asked to authorize an additional $4 million to finalize the conversion of the former Memorial Middle School into the new Town Hall. The project has faced rising costs due to HVAC and construction inflation.
- The Light Plant Dispute (Article 40): A recurring point of contention, this citizen’s petition seeks to shift authority over the Municipal Light Plant (MLP) away from the Town Manager and back to the elected Light Board.
- Civil Service Withdrawal (Articles 24 & 25): The town is looking for authorization to move the Fire and Police departments out of the state’s Civil Service system, a move intended to streamline local hiring and promotions.
- Nantasket Traffic Controls: Petitions regarding the Select Board’s authority over permanent traffic changes in the Nantasket Beach area will likely draw focus from residents concerned with seasonal congestion.
Community & Heritage
Voters will also weigh in on $1.49 million in Community Preservation projects, including a major $670,000 renovation for the Village Playground and basketball courts.
Additionally, residents are reminded that while Town Meeting handles the legislative business tomorrow, the Municipal Election will follow on Monday, May 18.
