Behind the Deliberation Room Door: Legal History and Open Cases of the Clancy Holdout Juror

PLYMOUTH, Mass. — An investigative report by NBC10 Boston has revealed that the lone holdout juror who forced a mistrial in the Lindsay Clancy murder case carries a documented personal history involving domestic violence allegations, an active restraining order, and open legal proceedings in Plymouth County court.

The revelation has raised serious questions about jury selection and panel dynamics in one of Massachusetts’ most high-profile trials.

A History of Domestic Violence Charges

Court records uncovered following the trial detail multiple domestic incidents involving the unnamed male juror:

  • Prior Arrest for Assault: The juror was previously arrested on domestic assault charges after allegedly grabbing his then-wife by the throat and throwing her into a dresser. While those criminal charges were ultimately dismissed prior to the Clancy trial, the incident resulted in a divorce.
  • Active Restraining Order: The juror remains subject to an active restraining order stemming from a separate domestic altercation. During that incident, a 911 call was placed by the juror’s 13-year-old nephew, who alleged the juror repeatedly punched him. The resulting order of protection was active throughout the duration of the Clancy deliberations.

Open Civil and Municipal Court Matters

In addition to his domestic violence history, local court dockets show the juror is currently navigating open legal disputes in the local court system:

  • Pending Eviction Proceedings: The juror is actively named as a defendant in an ongoing housing court matter, where his landlord is seeking formal eviction.
  • Ongoing Legal Scrutiny: Legal analysts note that while prior dismissed charges do not automatically disqualify a citizen from serving on a Massachusetts jury, the existence of an active restraining order and ongoing court involvement generally triggers rigorous questioning during voir dire (jury selection).

Conduct Inside the Deliberation Room

The juror’s personal background comes to light alongside alarming accounts from fellow jury members regarding his behavior during seven days of sequestered deliberations:

  • Reenacting the Crime: Juror Nick Dargie revealed to ABC News that during discussions, the holdout used a physical prop—a water bottle—to demonstrate and mimic how Clancy’s children were strangled with exercise bands. Dargie described the act as disturbing and unhelpful to evaluating evidence, stating, “We’re not here to play detective… This is serious.”
  • Refusal to Apply Legal Standards: Jury foreperson Ronni Carlson confirmed that the holdout explicitly admitted to having reasonable doubt regarding Clancy’s sanity at the time of the killings. However, he openly refused to sign the verdict forms for “not guilty by reason of insanity,” prompting defense attorney Kevin Reddington to file emergency motions requesting the judge remove him from the panel.

What Happens Next

The identities of all 12 jurors remain impounded under a temporary protective seal ordered by Judge William Sullivan.

With prosecutors weighing a second trial and defense counsel preparing post-trial motions for acquittal, the holdout’s background and participation are expected to feature prominently in upcoming procedural filings ahead of the September 29, 2026 status hearing at Plymouth Superior Court.
