Sinkhole Causes Temporary Lane Closure on Route 140 in Lakeville

LAKEVILLE, Mass. — A sinkhole that opened along Route 140 in Lakeville caused a temporary lane closure and disrupted the Tuesday morning commute, according to state officials.

Authorities say the roadway issue was reported early in the morning near Exit 12 on the northbound side of Route 140. Massachusetts State Police responded around 6 a.m. after receiving reports of multiple vehicles becoming disabled due to a large roadway defect. At least eight vehicles were impacted by the sinkhole conditions.

Officials from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) confirmed that crews were dispatched to the scene to conduct emergency repairs, including paving work along the affected shoulder area.

Lane Closure and Traffic Impact

As repair operations got underway, one lane of traffic was temporarily closed, leading to delays for drivers traveling through the area. Officials advised motorists to seek alternate routes while crews worked to stabilize and repair the roadway.

No Immediate Reports of Injuries

Despite the number of vehicles affected, there were no immediate reports of injuries associated with the incident. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as repairs are completed and traffic conditions improve.

Ongoing Repairs

MassDOT crews remained on scene throughout the morning working to fill and repave the damaged section of roadway. Drivers are urged to remain cautious when traveling through construction zones and to follow posted detours or traffic guidance.
