Abington Police Sgt. Risks Life to Rescue Woman from Oncoming Train During Mental Health Crisis

Abington, MA – March 17, 2026 – In a dramatic act of bravery, an Abington police sergeant risked his own life to save a woman who had positioned herself on the train tracks during a mental health crisis earlier this week.

The incident occurred near the Abington commuter rail station, drawing immediate attention from local authorities and the community.

According to police reports, the woman, identified as a 32-year-old Abington resident, was reportedly experiencing a severe mental health episode and walked onto the tracks just moments before a commuter train was approaching. Sergeant Daniel Reynolds of the Abington Police Department quickly responded after being alerted by bystanders.

Eyewitnesses described the tense scene: “It all happened so fast. The train was coming, and Sergeant Reynolds didn’t hesitate—he ran onto the tracks and pulled her out of harm’s way just seconds before the train passed,” said local resident Karen Mills.

Police confirmed that both the woman and Sergeant Reynolds were unharmed, though the sergeant later received a medical evaluation as a precaution. Emergency mental health services were immediately called to assist the woman, who is now receiving treatment and support.

Abington Police Chief Michael O’Connor praised his officer’s heroic actions: “Sergeant Reynolds displayed exceptional courage and presence of mind. His quick thinking saved a life, and we are extremely proud of his service to the community.”

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) temporarily halted train service along the line while first responders ensured the safety of everyone involved. Service resumed within an hour, and authorities are reviewing safety protocols to prevent future incidents.

This rescue has sparked conversations about mental health awareness and the need for additional resources in Abington and surrounding communities. Officials are encouraging anyone experiencing a crisis to contact trained professionals for immediate help.
