Wareham Police Officer Arrested on Rape and Domestic Assault Charges
WAREHAM, Mass. — A Wareham police officer has been arrested and is being held without bail following allegations of rape, strangulation and repeated threats involving a firearm during an on-and-off relationship with a former girlfriend.
According to court documents cited by Boston 25 News, Ryan Gomes, 41, of Wareham, was arrested on Friday, October 23, and faces multiple criminal charges stemming from allegations of abuse over several years.
Gomes faces two counts of rape, 15 counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, one count of strangulation or suffocation, and one count of assault and battery on a family or household member.
Investigation Began After Allegations Were Reported
According to investigators, the woman came forward in June to report an alleged sexual assault involving another man. During the investigation, she also reported alleged abuse by Gomes, whom she had dated on and off for several years.
The woman told investigators that she experienced physical and sexual abuse during the relationship. Court documents describe allegations that Gomes threatened her with a firearm during arguments, chased her through a residence while armed and strangled her during an incident in 2025.
She also described separate incidents in which she allegedly became heavily intoxicated after drinking beverages Gomes had prepared. She accused him of sexually assaulting her during their relationship.
The allegations prompted an investigation by Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office. Gomes was placed on administrative leave by the Wareham Police Department while the matter was investigated.
Officer’s Certification Suspended
The Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission suspended Gomes’ law enforcement certification following his arrest, according to published reports.
Gomes had previously received recognition for his actions during a 2024 shooting incident involving responding officers at a hotel in Wareham. He was among officers honored for their response to the incident.
According to court reporting, Gomes pleaded not guilty to the charges at his arraignment in Wareham District Court on October 26. He was ordered held without bail pending further court proceedings.
The criminal case remains ongoing. The charges are allegations, and Gomes is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
