Police Respond to Massachusetts Starbucks After Dispute Over Two Cents in Change
DEDHAM, MASSACHUSETTS โ Police were called to a Starbucks location in Dedham after a customer reportedly became upset over a dispute involving just two cents in change.

According to Boston 25 News (WFXT), the incident occurred shortly after 8 a.m. Friday, October 30, at the Starbucks on Route 1, also known as Providence Highway.
Police Chief Michael d’Entremont said the disagreement began after a customer believed he had not received two cents in change following a purchase.
The dispute reportedly comes amid changes in how businesses handle cash transactions following the end of U.S. penny production in 2025. With pennies no longer being manufactured, businesses have had to consider how to handle transactions involving small amounts of change.
Officers responded to the business and reportedly advised the customer to contact Starbucks corporate headquarters regarding the matter.
Boston 25 News reported that it reached out to Starbucks for comment and clarification about the company’s policy on returning pennies.
No arrests or additional enforcement actions were reported in connection with the incident.
