Former Telecom Employee Indicted in $228K Gift Card Embezzlement and Sports Betting Scheme
BOSTON — A former employee of Quincy-based Granite Telecommunications faces criminal charges after allegedly embezzling more than $228,000 from his employer and funneling the stolen funds through legal online sports books, the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office announced.
George Meegan, 60, of Whitman, was indicted by a Suffolk County grand jury on five counts: money laundering, larceny over $1,200, and three counts of filing false or fraudulent tax returns.
How the Alleged Scheme Worked
According to court filings and statement releases from Attorney General Andrea Campbell’s office, investigators allege that between January 2023 and June 2025, Meegan misused corporate power by using Granite Telecommunications operational and charitable credit cards to purchase approximately 460 gift cards totaling $228,372.
Meegan reportedly claimed the gift card purchases were intended for local charitable donations. Instead, prosecutors allege he utilized them for personal enrichment through a multi-step laundering process:
- Sportsbook Deposits: Nearly $113,000 worth of the gift cards were deposited directly into licensed legal sportsbook accounts.
- Cashing Out: Meegan subsequently transferred at least $75,000 from those gambling accounts directly into his personal bank accounts.
- Personal Bill Payments: Approximately $40,000 in gift cards were redeemed to cover Meegan’s personal Verizon Wireless and Google accounts.
Additionally, authorities allege Meegan failed to report any of the misappropriated funds or betting income on his state income tax returns for tax years 2023, 2024, and 2025.
Company and Legal Response
Granite Telecommunications confirmed the indictment in a statement, noting that its internal monitoring uncovered the discrepancies before reporting the scheme to authorities and cooperating fully with the investigation.
Meegan was arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court on Oct. 14 and was released on personal recognizance. As part of his conditions of release, the court barred Meegan from participating in legal gaming or managing any charitable funds while the case is pending.
The case is being prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Gaming Enforcement Division in coordination with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, the Massachusetts State Police, and the Department of Revenue’s Criminal Investigations Bureau.
