Remembering 9/11: Honoring the Fallen, Heroes, and History After 25 Years

It is hard to believe it has been 25 years. September 11, 2001, is one of those dates locked in time. Everyone who was old enough remembers exactly where they were, what the weather felt like, and that sudden, terrible moment when the world changed right before our eyes.

It was just a regular Tuesday morning. People were grabbing coffee, checking emails, boarding flights, and saying quick goodbyes to their families on the way out the door. Nobody knew it would be the last time.

Today, we pause to honor the 2,977 souls lost at the World Trade Center, in a field near Shanksville, and at the Pentagon. They were parents, kids, coworkers, and friends from all walks of life. Each one left behind an empty chair at the dinner table and a family that had to learn how to keep moving forward with a piece of their heart missing.

We also remember the incredible courage that showed up in the middle of all that darkness:

  • The First Responders: The firefighters, police officers, and EMTs who didn’t hesitate. While thousands were running out of those buildings, they were running in. So many made the ultimate sacrifice just trying to give someone else a chance to make it home.
  • The Flight 93 Passengers & Crew: Ordinary people forced into an impossible moment who chose to fight back, saving untold lives on the ground at the cost of their own.
  • Everyday Heroes: The strangers who held hands in dark stairwells, the people who carried coworkers down dozens of flights of stairs, and the boat captains who created a spontaneous sealift to carry half a million people to safety.

When we say “Never Forget,” it shouldn’t just be a bumper sticker phrase or a once-a-year hashtag. It means actually keeping their stories alive. It means teaching younger generations—who weren’t even born yet—about what happened, not just the tragedy, but the way people showed up for each other in the days that followed.

In the weeks after 9/11, division faded. People checked on their neighbors. Strangers hugged in the streets. We saw the very best of humanity rise out of the absolute worst.

Today, take a quiet minute. Say a prayer, light a candle, or just think about the families still carrying that weight every single day. Rest in peace to those we lost. We still remember, and we always will.
