Coastal Toll: Nor’easter Leaves Behind Sand, Debris, and Seawall Damage in Marshfield
MARSHFIELD, Mass. — While the torrential rain and howling winds have begun to ease along the Marshfield coastline, the powerful fall nor’easter has left a distinct trail of debris in its wake, blanketing coastal roads with thick layers of sand and rocks.
Along Central Avenue, heavy wave action pushed massive amounts of sediment and stones directly onto the asphalt. Though the roadway remains open, local authorities are urging drivers to exercise extreme caution and reduce speeds while navigating through the lingering debris.
The storm’s fury extended nearby into Humarock, where a viewer-submitted video captured a stark example of coastal vulnerability: a concrete seawall that had partially crumbled and pulled completely away from a residential property.
Reflecting on the realities of living right on the water, longtime resident Nancy Justason described the duality of coastal living.
“It rocked us and the house to sleep literally,” Justason said. “It’s a peninsula, it’s beautiful, but it is what it is, it’s mother nature, it’s half heaven half heartache.”
Local police and emergency personnel have been patrolling affected areas like Central Avenue to assess conditions and check for safety hazards. While widespread power outages have not been an immediate issue in Marshfield, the storm is expected to continue impacting parts of the region.
As the weather system slowly moves out, coastal homeowners are bracing to survey their properties for structural damage and begin the clean-up process.
