Brockton Mayor Moises Rodrigues has filed a lawsuit against the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, alleging that a 2025 crash involving a Massachusetts State Police trooper left him with serious injuries and ongoing disabilities.

According to court documents, the crash happened on May 11, 2025, on Route 138 in Raynham while Rodrigues was serving as a Brockton city councilor-at-large. The lawsuit alleges that State Trooper Augustine Moore crossed into Rodrigues’ travel lane and struck his vehicle. A State Police crash report listed inattention and failure to yield as contributing factors.

Rodrigues claims the collision caused severe physical and emotional injuries, including a head injury, headaches, dizziness, and injuries involving his neck, back, shoulder, knee, hip, leg, and foot. The lawsuit states that his medical expenses have exceeded $32,000.

The mayor alleges that the injuries left him partially disabled and unable to work for a period of time following the crash. Court records state he is seeking compensation for medical costs, lost wages, and other damages.

The lawsuit was filed after Rodrigues says efforts to reach an agreement outside of court were unsuccessful. He is requesting a jury trial and is seeking damages in an amount to be determined by the court.

Massachusetts State Police declined to comment on the case, citing the ongoing litigation. The Commonwealth has not yet filed a formal response to the lawsuit.

Rodrigues previously spoke publicly about the crash, describing the impact as a frightening experience and crediting the use of a seatbelt with helping save his life.

The lawsuit remains pending in Plymouth Superior Court.
