Hingham MA Man Accused of Firing Gun During Road Rage Shooting at Library Parking Lot Arrest Made

Hingham, Mass. — A road rage confrontation in a Hingham library parking lot led to gunfire Thursday, with a local man now facing multiple criminal charges after police say he fired a weapon during the dispute.

According to a report from Boston 25 News (WFXT), the incident unfolded at the Hingham Public Library parking lot, where a disagreement between drivers reportedly escalated into a dangerous confrontation. Police responded to reports of shots fired and quickly secured the area while investigators began collecting evidence.

Authorities said the confrontation began as a road rage incident before moving into the library parking lot. Investigators allege that words were exchanged between those involved before the situation escalated, resulting in a firearm being discharged.

Police identified the suspect as 60-year-old Hingham resident Steven A. License. According to authorities, License was accused of firing two shots during the confrontation. Officers located him at the scene and recovered a revolver believed to be connected to the incident.

The shooting caused a significant police response in the area as officers investigated what had happened and worked to determine whether there was any continued threat to the public. Officials later confirmed that there was no ongoing danger after the suspect was located and the firearm was secured.

Police said License was taken to a hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury that was not related to the gunfire. He was later taken into custody and charged in connection with the incident.

The charges include assault with intent to murder, attempted assault and battery with a firearm, assault with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, and disorderly conduct.

Prosecutors are expected to argue that the circumstances of the case present a danger to the community during upcoming court proceedings. A judge ordered License held pending a dangerousness hearing.

The incident has raised concerns among residents because it happened at a public location used by families, library visitors, and community members. The Hingham Public Library parking lot is normally a busy area, making the reported exchange especially alarming for those who frequent the area.

Investigators are continuing to review evidence, including witness statements and any available surveillance footage, to determine the complete timeline of events leading up to the shooting.

Police have not released additional information about the other driver involved in the confrontation or what specifically triggered the dispute. Authorities are continuing their investigation as the case moves through the court system.

Road rage incidents remain a growing concern across Massachusetts, with law enforcement officials repeatedly warning drivers to avoid escalating conflicts on the road. Police encourage motorists to create distance, avoid confrontations, and contact authorities when a dispute becomes threatening.

The Hingham Police Department continues to investigate the incident, and additional details may become available as court proceedings continue.

This report includes information first reported by Boston 25 News (WFXT).
