Plymouth County Sheriff Warns 33 Layoffs Possible Amid ‘Unprecedented’ Budget Crisis

The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department says at least 33 employees could be laid off as Sheriff Joseph McDonald Jr. warns of an unprecedented fiscal emergency affecting operations across Plymouth County.

Officials with the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department say the agency is facing a serious financial crisis that could result in dozens of layoffs.
Joseph McDonald Jr. announced that at least 33 employees may be laid off as the department confronts what he described as an “unprecedented fiscal emergency.”
According to the sheriff, the potential layoffs could impact several divisions, including a forensic services unit that helps local police departments process crime-scene evidence and assist with investigations.
The department provides correctional and law-enforcement support services across Plymouth County, working closely with municipal police departments and courts throughout the region.
Officials say rising operational costs and funding challenges have created a significant shortfall in the department’s budget. Leaders are currently working with state officials to explore options that could prevent the job cuts.
The possible layoffs come as sheriff offices across Massachusetts face increased scrutiny over budgets and spending practices, prompting reviews by state oversight agencies.
Sheriff McDonald said the department remains focused on maintaining public safety while navigating the financial difficulties.
Local leaders are expected to continue discussions in the coming weeks to determine whether additional funding or other measures could help stabilize the department’s finances and avoid the layoffs
