WAREHAM, MA — The Town of Wareham has officially announced the launch of the Wareham Silver Alert Program, a proactive public safety initiative aimed at protecting seniors and individuals with cognitive impairments.
The program establishes a strategic partnership between the Wareham Police Department, the Council on Aging, and local emergency services to ensure a rapid, coordinated response when a vulnerable resident goes missing.
A Proactive “Safety Net”
Unlike traditional missing person reports, the Silver Alert Program relies on a confidential pre-registration database. By providing law enforcement with essential information before an emergency occurs, the town can bypass the time-consuming process of gathering physical descriptions and medical history during the critical “golden hour” of a search.
“This is about shaving minutes off our response time,” town officials noted during the rollout. “When someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia wanders, every second counts. Having a photo and their ‘frequented locations’ already in our system allows us to hit the ground running.”
How to Register Your Loved Ones
The town is urging families and caregivers to register eligible residents immediately. The program is designed for those with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other developmental disabilities that may cause them to become disoriented or wander.
Registration forms are available at the following locations:
- Wareham Police Department: 2515 Cranberry Highway
- Wareham Council on Aging: 48 Marion Road
- Online: Available via the Official Town of Wareham Website.
What Information is Collected?
The registration process is thorough but confidential. Families are asked to provide:
- A recent high-resolution photograph.
- Physical descriptors (height, weight, distinguishing marks).
- Specific medical conditions and medications.
- Past addresses and favorite “hangout” spots (parks, old neighborhoods, or shops).
Community Impact
The Silver Alert Program joins a suite of local safety tools—including the Reverse 911 system—to create a comprehensive network for town residents. Local officials emphasize that the database is kept strictly confidential and is only accessed by emergency personnel during an active search incident.
