Town of Marion Awarded $2.09M for Wareham Road Water Main Project
The Town of Marion is pleased to announce that it has been awarded $2.09 million from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities (EOHLC) through the HousingWorks Infrastructure Program in support of the Wareham Road Water Main Project.
The grant-funded project will replace 3,200 feet of the existing Wareham Road water main, which was installed in 1928. The Wareham Road water main has a history of frequent breaks and has become a maintenance burden for the town, creating an obstacle for future development.
As a result of the project, the water main will be increased from 6 inches to 12 inches, improving system reliability and providing greater hydraulic capacity for area residents, businesses and future housing.
The project will also support firefighting operations through the installation of new, strategically placed hydrants and improvements to water flow, which will bolster firefighting resources in the area.
The water main project is planned for completion before the reconstruction of the Route 6 corridor by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (DOT), avoiding the need to cut into new pavement when road reconstruction begins.
The Town of Marion will coordinate with EOHLC and expects to finalize the necessary contracting requirements with the state in the coming weeks.
Additional information regarding the construction timeline, traffic logistics and neighborhood impact will be shared with the public as project planning progresses.
"This grant will allow the Town to improve critical infrastructure, ensuring a safe and reliable water supply while reducing the risk of future infrastructure breaks, improve fire flow and overall hydraulic deficiencies within the water system," said Town of Marion Engineering Manager Meghan Davis. "The grant funding allows the Town to execute vital water utility upgrades without placing additional financial burden on Marion residents or depleting the municipal budget."
