Brockton Surges Past Taunton 37‑12 in Second‑Half Display
Brockton Mass — The Brockton High School football team turned a night of early miscues into a second-half statement Friday, rallying from a ten-point deficit to defeat host Taunton High, 37‑12, at Aleixo “Tiger” Stadium. Powered by 35 unanswered points after the intermission, the Boxers (2‑3) picked up a pivotal victory over their league rivals (2‑3) and moved within striking distance of MIAA postseason qualification.

For the first twenty-four minutes, however, the contest belonged almost entirely to Taunton. Brockton stumbled out of the gate with early execution errors, including a bad snap on a punt attempt that resulted in a safety to give the Tigers an initial 2‑0 lead. Taunton quickly expanded on that momentum when senior wideout Michael Braxton III fielded a punt near midfield and sliced through the Boxers’ coverage unit for a long touchdown return. Following a missed extra point, Taunton held an 8‑0 lead.
Brockton briefly checked the home team’s momentum when defensive back Gavin Wetherell intercepted a pass inside the red zone, but the Boxers’ offense struggled to sustain drives against Taunton’s aggressive front seven. The Tigers extended their advantage to 12‑0 before late in the second quarter, when Brockton senior quarterback and co-captain Marcio Semedo engineered a crucial two-minute drive to get the Boxers on the board. Semedo capped the series with a touchdown pass to fellow captain Kayveon Burke, sending the teams into halftime with Taunton leading 12‑2 after a missed two-point conversion attempt.

Whatever adjustments were voiced in the visitors’ locker room by first-year Brockton head coach Mike Norman Jr. produced immediate results in the third quarter. “We started the game really flat, but after the half we came out ready to impose our will,” Norman said following the win. “That’s the team that we’re capable of being, and that was the mentality at halftime: we’ll adjust, we’ll run right at them, and it worked for us.”
Brockton’s defensive line set the tone on the opening drive of the second half, forcing a fumble on a deep sack that gave the offense a short field. Running back Kayveon Burke capitalized immediately, punching in a short touchdown run. Semedo connected on the two-point conversion to push Brockton ahead 17‑12, giving the Boxers a lead they would not relinquish.
Burke was relentless on the ground throughout the final two quarters, adding his second rushing touchdown of the night on a sustained drive to stretch the score to 24‑12. Brockton’s passing attack then put the game out of reach. Semedo hit Andrew Moreno on a crisp 25‑yard streak into the end zone, and followed up on the next possession with a 20‑yard touchdown strike to Derick Exilus.
Wetherell capped off his standout night for the Boxer defense in the fourth quarter by recovering a Taunton fumble on a 27‑yard return, setting up Brockton’s final points and sealing the 37‑12 victory.
With the win, Brockton sits one victory away from the three-win benchmark required for tournament consideration. The Boxers will aim to build on their momentum when they hit the road to face Weymouth High School on Friday.
