Hingham, Mass. — Groundbreaking Marks New Era for Hingham Community Pool
A long-awaited project that will bring a new community swimming facility to Hingham has officially moved from planning into construction, as town officials and residents gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony marking the start of a new era for the local pool.
The ceremony was held July 23 at the South Shore Country Club, where the new town-owned pool is being built. Hingham leaders, members of the Select Board, Country Club Management Committee, state officials, and community supporters attended the event to celebrate the beginning of construction.
The new facility will replace the former town pool, which had been closed indefinitely since 2019 after structural problems were discovered. The closure left many residents without a public swimming facility and led the town to begin exploring options for a modern replacement.
The new pool complex is planned to include a six-lane, 25-yard lap pool, a zero-depth entry pool designed for younger swimmers and residents with accessibility needs, a splash pad, a bathhouse, and related support facilities. The design focuses on creating a recreation space that can serve residents of all ages.
The project has been several years in the making. Residents approved funding for the new pool through town votes, with the project receiving support to move forward after extensive planning, design work, and discussions about costs and construction.
Earlier this year, the town announced that it had selected Construction Dynamics Inc. of Clinton, Massachusetts, for the construction contract after the project moved through the bidding process. The contract was awarded for approximately $7.896 million, staying within the funding approved for the project.
Town officials said construction is expected to continue through the next year, with the new facility projected to be completed in time for the 2027 summer swimming season. The project is located at 274 South Street on the South Shore Country Club grounds.
For many residents, the groundbreaking represents more than the start of a construction project. The return of a community pool is seen as the restoration of an important recreational resource that has been missed by families, swimmers, and local programs since the previous facility closed.
The new pool is expected to provide opportunities for swimming lessons, recreational programs, fitness activities, and community gatherings once completed. Hingham Recreation will continue to oversee programming at the facility, giving residents access to organized aquatic activities.
As construction begins, town officials say the project represents a major investment in Hingham’s future and a commitment to providing updated recreational facilities for current and future generations.
