Wareham Town Meeting Tonight: Key Votes on Housing, Environment, and Local Policies

Wareham Mass-is set to take place tonight, Monday, April 27, at 7 p.m. at , located at 7 Viking Drive.

All registered voters in are eligible to attend, participate, and cast votes on a series of important town matters, including budgets, community projects, and citizen-led petitions.

Town officials say some of the biggest decisions of the night will center around the use of Community Preservation Fund money. The fund, generated through a surtax on properties valued over $100,000, supports projects related to affordable housing, historic preservation, recreation, and open space.

One of the major proposals up for consideration is a $300,000 request to support the expansion of at 2220 Cranberry Highway. The funding would help move forward the affordable senior housing portion of the development.

Another large request involves $700,000 to help conserve . The project would allow the Community Preservation Committee to purchase cranberry bogs and restore them into natural waterways. The area is connected to the and stretches from Route 6 to Cromesett Road.

In addition to funding decisions, voters will consider two citizen petitions that could impact daily life in town.

A proposal from resident seeks to ban single-use plastic grocery and takeout bags in Wareham. The measure would not apply to other plastic products such as trash bags, produce bags, or pet waste bags. Supporters argue the ban would help reduce litter, protect wildlife, and limit microplastic pollution.

Another petition, introduced by former Select Board member and current Finance Committee member , would allow restaurants in parts of Main Street and Onset Avenue to count nearby public parking spaces toward their required minimum parking. The proposal is aimed at easing restrictions for local businesses.

Residents planning to attend are encouraged to arrive early, as discussions and votes on these issues are expected to draw strong community interest.
