South Shore Mother and Son Stranded in Qatar Amid Middle East Conflict
Plimoth — March 7, 2026 — A local South Shore family remains stranded in Doha, Qatar after regional conflict erupted following recent military strikes involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
Hingham resident Stacey Schuhwerk and her adult son Tyler Paretchan were returning home from vacation when the sudden escalation of violence forced the closure of airspace across the Gulf region, grounding flights and trapping travelers in the Middle East.
The pair have been in Doha for several days, unable to secure commercial flights home as airports remain shut or severely limited. Stacey Schuhwerk told local news she and her son have been sheltering in place at their hotel and trying to reach U.S. officials for help.
“We’ve been here almost a week with no clear way home,” Schuhwerk said.
The U.S. State Department has said it is working on evacuation options — including charter flights from nearby countries — but so far the stranded travelers in Qatar have seen little direct assistance.
The situation comes as international travel remains deeply disrupted due to airspace closures after the Middle East conflict expanded, leaving thousands of Americans and tourists scrambling for routes out of the region.
South Shore officials and members of Congress have been contacted by families seeking help, and local lawmakers are pushing for more robust evacuation plans and coordination with federal authorities to bring residents home safely.
