Wareham’s Fearing Tavern: Centuries of History, Decades of Haunts

WAREHAM, MA – In the heart of Wareham, Massachusetts, stands a structure whispered to be one of the town’s oldest and most enigmatic: the Fearing Tavern. But beyond its significant historical marker, the timber-framed building carries a chilling reputation, one that has persisted for generations: it’s profoundly haunted.

Dating back to the late 17th century, the Fearing Tavern, located on Elm Street, is a living testament to Wareham’s Colonial past. Originally built around 1690, it served as a bustling coaching inn and waypoint for travelers, merchants, and soldiers navigating the burgeoning colonies. Its ancient walls have witnessed countless stories unfold, from weary travelers seeking shelter to locals exchanging news and gossip over a pint.

“The Fearing Tavern isn’t just a building; it’s a direct link to Wareham’s foundational history,” explains Dr. Eleanor Vance, a local historian specializing in early New England architecture. “It predates the town’s official incorporation and played a critical role in its early development. Every beam and floorboard has over 300 years of stories embedded within it.”

However, not all these stories are of the living. For decades, locals and caretakers have reported eerie phenomena within the tavern’s historic confines, leading to its widespread reputation as one of Massachusetts’ most actively haunted locations.

Accounts include disembodied whispers emanating from empty rooms, the faint scent of pipe tobacco or long-extinguished hearth fires, and sudden, inexplicable cold spots even on warm summer days. More dramatic sightings report shadowy figures gliding through doorways, objects mysteriously shifting, and doors unlatching and creaking open when no one is near.

“We’ve documented numerous instances of intelligent activity,” states Sarah Jenkins, lead investigator for New England Paranormal Research, who has conducted several overnight investigations at the tavern. “From EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena) capturing faint voices asking questions, to direct responses observed through our equipment, there’s a definite presence here. It feels like the past residents are still very much tied to this place.”

Local legends speak of several resident spirits. Some believe the stern, watchful spirit of an early innkeeper still oversees his establishment, ensuring order and quiet. Others report encounters with a heartbroken traveler who met an untimely end within its walls, or even the playful spirit of a child, heard giggling or seen flitting through the upper chambers.

“You learn to live with it,” says Robert Clark, a long-time volunteer at the Fearing Tavern, which now serves as a historical museum open for tours. “Sometimes you’ll be locking up for the night, and you hear footsteps on the stairs when you know you’re alone. Or you’ll find a chair moved, or a book opened to a specific page. It’s unsettling at first, but you come to see it as part of the tavern’s unique personality.”

Whether you’re a history enthusiast or a seeker of the supernatural, the Fearing Tavern offers a compelling journey into Wareham’s past, blurring the lines between historical fact and spectral folklore. It stands as a powerful reminder that some stories, and perhaps some souls, refuse to be confined to the annals of history, choosing instead to linger, whispering their tales through the centuries.

The Fearing Tavern is periodically open for public tours and special events. Visitors are encouraged to check local listings for schedules and to experience its unique atmosphere – and perhaps its spectral inhabitants – for themselves.

About The Fearing Tavern:

The Fearing Tavern is one of Wareham, Massachusetts’ oldest standing structures, dating back to approximately 1690. Originally an active coaching inn, it now operates as a historical museum, preserving the rich history of the region.
