BROCKTON MA — The “City of Champions” officially has a new banner to hang. This weekend, the atmosphere at West Middle School was electric as NBA Draft No. 1 overall pick A.J. Dybantsa returned to his hometown, trading the bright lights of the draft stage for the familiar courts where his journey began.
The 19-year-old phenom, recently tapped first overall by the Washington Wizards, spent Sunday connecting with the next generation of Brockton athletes. For Dybantsa, the visit was less about his new professional status and more about staying grounded in the “508” spirit that propelled him to the top of the basketball world.
“I’m just a kid from Brockton,” Dybantsa told a gymnasium filled with local youth. “Everything I’ve achieved, I learned right here. The grit, the grind—it all comes from the streets of this city.”
The event, which saw the star handing out gear and offering candid advice to aspiring players, served as a powerful reminder of his roots. As he prepares to transition to the NBA, Dybantsa’s message to the community was clear: his success is a testament to the resilience of his hometown.
Dybantsa’s selection as the top pick in the 2026 draft marks a historic moment for Massachusetts basketball. As he looks toward his rookie season, he aims to carry the legacy of Brockton’s athletic legends—like Marciano and Hagler—into the modern era.
“I’m not looking for a shortcut,” he said, addressing the crowd. “I’m looking to work hard, represent where I’m from, and show these kids that it’s possible.”
With the draft now behind him, Dybantsa is ready to hit the hardwood, carrying the pride of Brockton with him all the way to D.C.
