HANSON, Mass. — A heartbreaking scene unfolded in Hanson on Monday evening, leaving a local family grieving and a community shaken after a pickup truck crashed directly into a home, killing the driver.
First responders rushed to 481 High Street just before 6:30 p.m. to find a chaotic scene. A Chevrolet pickup truck had plowed straight through the front windows of the house, flipping completely onto its side amid shattering glass and splintering wood.
Inside the wreckage, the driver—a 57-year-old Hanson man—was unconscious. Firefighters faced a grueling, complex rescue operation, working meticulously for quite some time to cut him free from the twisted metal. He was rushed to Brockton Hospital, but tragically, he could not be saved. His name has not yet been released.
While one family faces a devastating loss, the homeowner is dealing with the sheer shock of a near-miss that feels nothing short of miraculous. Hanson Police Chief Michael Casey shared that the resident was home at the time and normally spends his evenings sitting in the exact front room the truck destroyed.
“He indicated that he usually sits in that room,” Chief Casey said. “But he indicated that, because it was a nice day, he was sitting in the sunroom.”
The violent impact shattered the quiet evening for the entire neighborhood. Chris Briggs was out working in his yard when the silence was broken by an unforgettable noise.
“It was loud. It sounded like a dump truck dropping something off… but it sounded louder,” Briggs said. “I ran over the hill over here on the side yard and could see a car through the front of the house across the street, so I just ran over and called.”
In the minutes before help arrived, the best of the neighborhood came forward. Realizing someone was trapped, several neighbors rushed into the yard and scrambled onto the side of the overturned truck. They tried desperately to get a response or find a way through the passenger side, but the deployed airbags and heavy damage kept them from reaching him.
The crash left a gaping hole in the front of the house, compromising its structure. Officials quickly shut down High Street between Holmes and Main streets, keeping it closed well into the night so crews could safely clear the scene and investigate.

Now, local authorities are trying to piece together exactly what went wrong. The investigation is being handled jointly by the Hanson Police Department, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, and the Massachusetts State Police.
