Big Y Opens First of Two New Massachusetts Stores in Pembroke
Pembroke, MA — Big Y has officially opened the doors to its newest Massachusetts location in Pembroke, marking the first of two new stores the grocery chain plans to launch in the state this year.
The store, located at 24 Mattakeesett Street in Pembroke Plaza, takes over the former Stop & Shop space and brings a fresh grocery option to the busy shopping center. The roughly 38,000-square-foot store features Big Y’s familiar layout, with expanded fresh produce, bakery, deli, meat, and prepared foods departments.
Company officials say the Pembroke opening is part of a broader expansion across Massachusetts as the Springfield-based, family-owned chain continues growing its footprint in Eastern and Southeastern communities. The store is expected to serve as a major new anchor for the plaza and create additional local job opportunities.
Another Big Y location is expected to open in Saugus later this year, with additional stores planned for Fairhaven and North Dartmouth in the coming years.
The Pembroke opening follows months of preparation, hiring events, and local anticipation after the chain confirmed it would be moving into the long-vacant supermarket space.
